Virtually unknown a few years ago Iggy Azalea has become a
mainstream music artist. You may of heard the hit song Fancy. What makes her
such stand out? Well, she’s female, Australian, and white. Which is not the
typical formula for a rapper.
The ongoing feud between Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks is a reflection of this but could also be influenced from the similar names down to the conflict in music.Recently, Azealia Banks emotionally states in the HOT97 interview her frustrations with the hip hop and mainstream culture and even mentioned the previous Grammy awards where Macklemore won the BEST RAPPER OF THE YEAR over Drake. The element of race is also highlighted in her interview as she tearfully speaks about Iggy Azalea’s song entitled D.R.U.G.S where she talked about being “a runaway slave…master”. Many artists have also stated this such as J.Cole in his Forest Hills album.Iggy Azalea spoke out in a letter apologising and stating that her song was an inspiration from Kendrick Lamar. She stated in the letter “I am for unity and equality”.
Due to her rise in fame people have probed her twitter history looking for skeletons in her closet, and they have found some. Racial and homophobic tweets have made headlines and caused fans to react on twitter. Here are some screen shots (click to enlarge the image).
Prone to social media knock-outs with other celebrities especially with arch nemesis Azealia Banks and civilians, her temper does not help her career. I guess biting your tongue isn't applicable for everyone. Determined not to be over before she’s really begun Iggy has decided to change her spots by staying off social media. Sierra Charisse Public Relations reports that after "cyber
bullies constantly degrading her rap skills. talent, dishonor to Black culture,
and even cellulite in her thighs, Iggy is saying: enough is enough."
Her team is taking over as an emergency protocol. She describes it as being too emotionally draining, maybe? But being disliked certainly doesn't help sell albums.

Here are my thoughts on this case. Social media hiatus or banning can be useful and in Iggy's case necessary. Whether it's to do with online bullying or her creating a bad name for herself by reacting.

Oh wow things online never are deleted or forgotten. Although it doesn't excuse what she said what does dragging it back up achieve. I don't blame her for taking a breather on her online accounts I would to if I was getting ridiculed every ten seconds.

DeleteRappers have something popping up every other day like Nelly's recent arrest with drug possession and illegal guns. In her case I feel people are making picking on her because she is different. A genre of music doesn't belong to one ethnicity. But keeping it hush for a while is a good PR move.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Iggy keeping hush is the best way forward to concentrate on her music and remain having a good reputation. Genre of music should be for everyone no matter the colour of the skin but it doesn't help either naming your songs 'runaway slave master' when you are an artist influenced by the culture of the music that originates from African or Caribbean descent.
